More Than Medicine:
Rural Medical Services

About the Program

The Rural Medical Services (RMS) program began in 1999 as a mobile medical unit that traveled throughout the remote impoverished villagers of northeast India. A community medicine doctor, Dr. Hari Babu, led this team and has treated more than 130,000 patients who have suffered from various illnesses and diseases since that time.

Today, RMS is managed by the staff at Shanti Bhavan Medical Center. The team travels three days a week to the outer remote impoverished villagers and helps meet the medical needs of impoverished individuals and families. Patients who are in critical need are brought to the hospital for immediate care.

More Than Medicine

In addition to medical needs, this team also strives to meet these underprivileged groups’ emotional and spiritual needs by offering counseling and spiritual guidance. They spend time with people in each community while teaching them life skills and educating them on a wide variety of health and wellness-related topics, including:
  • Malnutrition
  • Sanitation Practices
  • Mosquito Prevention
  • Alcohol Awareness
  • Physical and Emotional Abuse
  • Dental Care
  • Personal Hygiene
  • Feminine Hygiene
  • Prenatal Care
  • Children’s Health-Immunizations
  • Prevention of Malaria, Tuberculosis, Cholera, and Typhoid

How You Can Support Rural Medical Services

It will take many people working together to address the public health challenges we face today in the rural communities throughout northeast India. You can join that group of people by supporting this program with a donation or grant.

The COVID-19 pandemic is devastating communities across India. We are the only modern hospital available to many of the people we serve.
