A Hospital Without Walls: Community Health Leaders

About the Program

In addition to a hospital and outpatient clinic, Shanti Bhavan Medical Center (SBMC) also serves as a medical education center. Through our Community Health Leaders program, the professional staff at SBMC trains classes of local village men and women in basic healthcare so they can return to their native villages as trained medical practitioners. They conduct nutritional and sanitation training, as well as provide the first level of preventative healthcare, emergency care, and triage. Students must complete a 90-day training period, which includes classroom and field experience, before becoming certified. The graduates then return every 6-8 months for advanced training.

Community Health Services

Graduates from this program proudly serve local villages across northeast India. Many of these villages severely lack access to modern healthcare and medical facilities. Graduates are trained in basic healthcare, including:
  • Preventative Healthcare
  • First Aid
  • Emergency Care
  • Vaccinations
  • Inoculations
  • Midwifery
  • Nutrition Education
  • Sanitation Education

How You Can Support Community Health Leaders

In order to continue providing these services, we need to recruit and train more students—and we can only do so with the financial support of donors and philanthropic foundations. Your gift will help us continue to meet the medical needs of local village men and women. Thank you for supporting Community Health Leaders!

The COVID-19 pandemic is devastating communities across India. We are the only modern hospital available to many of the people we serve.
